Ajax’s Chief Executive Makes UEFA Claim Which Will Delight Celtic Fans

Ajax chief executive Edwin van der Sar believes UEFA have had a change of heart about some European leagues ending their seasons early.

Europe’s governing body were said to be prepared to withhold European places if countries opted to end their campaigns before all league fixtures were completed, but van der Sar thinks the policy may well be about to change:

“I believe UEFA’s position on medium and smaller leagues has changed. Certainly, I no longer believe there will be any possibility of possible sanctions that would exclude teams from European football next season.”

“Throughout this, we have been in close contact with UEFA, the European Clubs’ Association and of course all the other teams from our league and there is a growing belief everything will be decided next week.”

The SPFL have held off from calling the Premiership season due to UEFA’s stance, but if van der Sar’s comments turn out to be correct, it would be a big boost to Celtic’s hopes of clinching nine in a row.

Dundee confirmed their vote in favour of the SPFL resolution on Wednesday, meaning that the Hoops could now be declared league champions on April 23rd when the next meeting will be convened.

There will, of course, be those who will oppose the decision but with the survival of the Scottish game at stake, the vast majority of teams are keen for the 2019/20 season to come to an early conclusion.
