Celtic And Newcastle Set For Transfer Battle As 42 Cap International Midfielder Becomes Available

Crystal Palace midfielder James McCarthy will be let go on a free transfer this summer, according to reports in the English media.

The 30-year-old, who has 42 caps for the Republic of Ireland, has struggled for game time at Selhurst Park this season and he will be offloaded when his contract expires in June.

Celtic have considered making an approach for McCarthy in the past, and they are expected to be involved in the race to sign the former Wigan and Everton player once again.

The Hoops are, though, likely to have competition for the Irishman’s signature, with Newcastle also tipped to make a move for the midfielder.

Considering McCarthy is a boyhood Celtic fan, the Hoops would be the favourites to secure the player’s services, but much may depend on whether the Scottish club’s new head coach would be interested. Every manager has their own ideas when it comes to recruitment and the Republic of Ireland international may not fit into their plans.
