Celtic Close To Making Their Sixth Signing Of The Summer

Celtic are closing in on the signing of Rosenborg left-back Birger Meling, according to the Herald. The Norwegian would become the club’s sixth recruit this summer after the Hoops signed Jonathan Afolabi yesterday.

Manager Neil Lennon was asked about the club’s pursuit of Meling after the Scottish champions’ 2-1 win over Dunfermline yesterday, but the Irishman refused to give much away.

Meling would be Celtic’s replacement for Kieran Tierney, who left for Arsenal in a £25m deal earlier this month. The 24-year-old has ten caps for Norway and has made over 100 appearances for Rosenborg since joining from Stabaek in February 2017.

The fullback played the full 90 minutes in his club’s 1-1 draw against Odds BK yesterday evening but it is believed he could be signed before the Europa League tie against AIK on Thursday.

The Scottish transfer window shuts in just over two weeks, with Celtic keen to strengthen their squad before the deadline.
