Celtic are stepping up their attempts to sign Huddersfield right-back Tommy Smith, according to reports in the English media.

The Terriers are said to value the 27-year-old at £4m but it is believed that the Hoops rate the player closer to £2.5m.

Whether the two clubs can reach an agreement over a transfer fee for Smith, it remains to be seen.

Manager Neil Lennon may, though, have to move quickly in order to land the defender. Stoke City are also believed to be interested in the player.

Smith has spent his entire senior career with Huddersfield after coming through the youth ranks at Manchester City. The fullback has made 200 appearances for the Yorkshire club since he arrived on a free transfer in 2012.

However, he struggled for game time last season due to injury, and despite captaining the side, he had to battle for a starting place at right-back with Florent Hadergjonaj.
