Celtic Urged To Recruit Ex Chelsea Manager As Club Give Permission For Postecoglou To Speak To Spurs

Ex-Celtic midfielder Kris Commons has told his former club to approach Graham Potter about replacing Ange Postecoglou as Hoops boss.

The Englishman was sacked by Chelsea at the start of April, having spent less than seven months at Stamford Bridge but Commons claims that the former Brighton head coach hasn’t become a bad manager overnight:

“There would have been better managers than Potter who would have failed at Chelsea this season. It was nigh-on impossible given the circumstances and I really don’t think his reputation will have taken much of a hit.”

“If Celtic can land an ex- Liverpool boss like Rodgers, then they certainly would have a chance of getting someone like Potter. It would be daft not to at least ask him the question, if and when Postecoglou does depart.”

It’s an intriguing suggestion that Commons makes but it remains to be seen whether Potter does come under consideration, with majority shareholder Dermot Desmond now looking at potential candidates.

The early frontrunners for the Celtic job

Reports suggest that former manager Brendan Rodgers is one of the favourites to replace Postecoglou, along with former Leeds coach Jesse Marsch.

Rodgers does have a fractious relationship with club fans after having left the Scottish champions midseason to join Leicester City in 2019.

The Northern Irishman was, though, very successful during his time in charge at Parkhead, winning seven major trophies, and two trebles.

Marsch, in contrast, has struggled to replicate the success he had at Red Bull Salzburg in subsequent spells with RB Leipzig and Leeds. The American would have a lot to prove if he took over the reins in Glasgow.

Postecoglou’s exit from Celtic is now a matter of time

The Australian has reportedly been given permission by the Hoops to speak with Tottenham. He is said to have already agreed a two-year contract with the English Premier League side, with an option for a further twelve months.

Postecoglou is keen to take a number of staff with him down south, including assistant John Kennedy, first-team coach Gavin Strachan and video analyst Greg Wallace.
