Celtic Boss Gets ‘Worst Manager’ Tag As Lazio Defeat Hands Him Unwanted European Record

Celtic’s loss to Lazio on Wednesday night has handed Brendan Rodgers an unwanted Champions League record, according to talkSPORT.

The defeat means that Rodgers now has a 10% win ratio in Europe’s premier competition, which is the poorest record of any manager who has taken charge of 20 Champions League matches or more.

86 other coaches have reached the milestone but none of them have won fewer matches than Rodgers, who has recorded 2 victories, 5 draws and 13 defeats since making his debut as manager in the tournament.

The Irishman’s two wins came at 2 different teams. He won 2-1 against Ludogorets as Liverpool boss in 2014, before recording his second victory during his first stint at Celtic, beating Anderlecht 3-0 in 2017.

TalkSPORT have labelled Rodgers the Champions League‘s “worst manager”, although there are likely to be plenty of other coaches with worst records who have simply not reached the 20-match threshold.

Another disappointing result in Europe for Celtic

The 2-1 loss to Lazio was hard to take for Hoops supporters, as it was a game that the home side could have easily won. A narrow offside call ruled out a Luis Palma goal. If that had stood, Rodgers’ side wouldn’t have been pursuing a goal late on in the game, leaving themselves exposed at the back.

Even in the opening group match against Feyenoord, the Scottish champions more than held their own before conceding a poor free-kick and going down to nine men.

Can Rodgers improve his record in continental competitions?

Of course, the stats don’t lie and the Hoops boss clearly hasn’t managed to crack the code for playing in Europe.

With Atletico Madrid coming up at the end of October, you wouldn’t bank on Rodgers improving his record by getting a win against the Spanish giants. Still, you would hope that, before the group phase is over, Celtic can get a victory on the board.
