“So Impressive” – Rodgers Singles Out Celtic Star For Praise After Recent Performances

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has emphasised the important role that goalkeeper Joe Hart plays in the first-team squad.

The former Manchester City and Tottenham player has been in good form over the past few months, and he was again excellent against St Mirren in the Scottish Cup at the weekend. Rodgers was keen to highlight the influence that the 36-year-old has both on and off the pitch:

“Joe doesn’t have a lot to do but the times he does he makes wonderful saves. He’s a real catalyst for the team with the way him and Cal lead the dressing room. The saves he makes are so impressive. There were lots of crosses, lots of balls into the box.”

“But he was very clean. You always want keepers to catch but if they can’t then there’s a lot of distance on it. He did that very well more than a few times. It was another clean sheet for him and that was important. Joe’s a very experienced player.”

Will Celtic allow Hart’s contract to run down?

As things stand, it looks as if the former England international will be leaving Parkhead at the end of the season. His current deal expires in June.

There are no reports suggesting that Hart could extend his stay, which is slightly surprising considering Rodgers’ warm words.

A young No.1 could be brought in

While it appears that Rodgers has no issue with the fact that Hart isn’t the best when playing out from the back, it is something that may be looked at if the club do decide to find a replacement.

Age will also be a factor. With Hart not getting any younger, the club may pursue someone who, not only has the characteristics that Rodgers needs but, can also remain in goal for many years.

Even so, the Hoops would certainly miss the experience Hart provides in the dressing room if he were to leave this summer.
