Celtic Players Whose Contracts Expire in the Summer

While the current SPFL season is still ongoing, Ange Postecoglou and Celtic will already have one eye on next season. With three players out of contract at the end of this season, who will be kept at the club?

Among the players in this list include a young goalkeeper and two loaned midfielders. Both of the midfielders have option to buy clauses in their contracts.

Conor Hazard

Conor Hazard is the only player contracted to Celtic whose deal will run out in the summer – the other two players on this list are on loan.

This season, Hazard has been primarily reserved for European fixtures, with Joe Hart being played in league games. In that time, he’s made 14 appearances, letting in a concerning 23 goals. Of course, this isn’t all his fault – Celtic have become notorious for their lack of success in continental competitions over the past few years.

Hazard joined Celtic all the way back in 2014, when he was just 15 years old. Now, aged 24, is it time for the Northern Irish shot stopper to move on?

Tomiki Iwata

Defensive midfielder Tomoki Itawa is one of several players that Postecoglou has snapped up from the J-League, alongside the likes of Reo Hatate and Kyogo Furuhashi.

While his loan deal will expire at the end of May, Celtic do have an option to buy him permanently. The amount that The Celtic would need to pay is unclear – however, he is still something of an unknown quantity at Celtic Park, having only arrived at the club this month.

He made his Celtic debut in the Scottish Cup tie against Greenock Morton, which the Bhoys won 5-0. He’s also made four appearances for his native Japan.

Oliver Abildgaard

Oliver Abildgaard signed for Celtic on loan back in September with an option to buy. Since then, he has made just nine appearances in all competitions for the Celts.

He has not been a first team regular by any means – Ange Postecoglou appears content for him to move elsewhere at the season’s conclusion.

While not a bad player by any means, Abildgaard has struggled to break into Celtic’s first team ahead of established talents like Callum McGregor and David Turnbull. It looks unlikely that Celtic will be bringing him to the club permanently at this stage.
