Celtic Join EPL Rival In Pursuing 11 Cap International Who Is Available On Free Transfer

Celtic and Sheffield United are both keen on signing former Stade Brestois midfielder Haris Belkebla, according to Fennec Football.

The website claims that the Algerian, who has been capped eleven times by his country, is a target for the two clubs, in addition to teams in Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

Belkebla left Brest when his contract expired at the end of June, despite being a regular starter for the Ligue One club last season, and he is currently a free agent.

Celtic have actually been linked with the 29-year-old before. Both the Hoops and Rangers reportedly made enquiries about his availability in the summer of 2020.

It seems as if the Scottish champions’ recruitment department have kept tabs on Belkebla’s progress since then, with the fact that he is now unattached making him a more attractive target.

Belkebla may be tempted by a move to the Middle East

Fennec Football report that the player does have “astronomical offers” on the table from both Qatari club Al Gharafa and an unnamed team in Saudi Arabia.

However, there is a feeling that Belkebla’s international career would be over if he accepted a move to the Middle East, so there is still a strong possibility that he will stay in Europe.

Celtic don’t really need more midfield options

Belkebla is a central midfield player by trade and that is not an area of the pitch where manager Brendan Rodgers is short of numbers.

In addition to the likes of Reo Hatate, Callum McGregor, Matt O’Riley, Tomoki Iwata, David Turnbull and James McCarthy, the likes of Kwon Hyeok-kyu and Odin Thiago Holm have also been signed to bolster the position in recent weeks.

For that reason, you would think that there is very little chance of Belkebla making the switch to Celtic Park this summer.
