Celtic Try To Fend Off Italian Rival As They Hold Talks To Seal 5M Transfer Of 6ft 2 Defender

Celtic are locked in talks to sign Hajduk Split defender Mario Vuskovic, according to reports in the Scottish media.

The 19-year-old is valued at £5m by his club and the Hoops will have to fight off Serie A club Torino to seal the 6ft 2 centre-back’s signature.

Vuskovic has only made 44 senior appearances for Split but he is a player who is highly rated in his country, with the teenager having also picked up six caps for Croatia at Under 21 level.

New manager Ange Postecoglou appears to be keen on hitting the ground running in terms of signings. Reports suggest that Celtic are also readying a £3m offer for former academy graduate Aaron Hickey.

The left-back is currently playing for Bologna in Italy, but when asked recently about the interest being shown in him, he said he was completely focused on playing for his current club:

“Well I am fully aware that there has been interest. I can see it all – but I have just got to keep my head down and keep my full focus on Bologna just now.”

Fans will be hoping that the signings of both Vuskovic and Hickey will be the start of a significant overhaul of the first-team squad, which came up massively short in its pursuit of ten in a row last campaign.
