“I Find That Preposterous” Sutton Uses Wenger Example As He Defends Postecoglou Amid EPL Talk

Ex-Celtic striker Chris Sutton has backed Ange Postecoglou to be a success in the Premier League if he does become manager of an English top-flight team in the future.

Manchester City are reportedly keeping tabs on the Australian as they consider potential successors to Pep Guardiola. While other pundits have questioned Postecoglou’s pedigree, Sutton rallied to his defence, citing the example of Arsene Wenger, who also made the switch from Japanese football to manage in the UK:

“Arsene Wenger was unheard of wasn’t he? Arsene Wenger was laughed at, sneered at – ‘a school teacher’. That’s what Arsene Wenger was when he took over Arsenal and what a career he had. So why are we doubting whether Ange Postecoglou, who’s managed his national team at a World Cup, could manage in the Premier League? I find that preposterous.”

Of course, Hoops supporters will be hoping that Postecoglou doesn’t leave Parkhead anytime soon. He has overseen a remarkable turnaround at the Scottish club since his appointment last summer, with the prospect of a domestic treble now realistic.

In terms of the City job, Guardiola is contracted to the Premier League leaders until 2023, and there is talk that the Spaniard will extend his stay anyway, so there is no imminent threat of Postecoglou being poached.
