“Is Peter Lawwell Having A Laugh?” Provan Lays Into Celtic Over Pursuit Of Veteran Striker

Ex-Celtic winger Davie Provan has questioned the ambition of his former club after manager Neil Lennon all but admitted that they are holding talks over signing free agent Steven Fletcher.

Contrasting the Hoops’ attempts to snap up the veteran forward, with Rangers’ capture of Kemar Roofe from Anderlecht, Provan called on the Scottish champions to make better decisions in the transfer market:

“Is Peter Lawwell having a laugh? I know Covid-19 has hit club finances hard but the best-paid blazer in Scottish football has to up his game.”f injury-prone Fletcher is the extent of Lawwell’s ambition, he needs a word with himself.”

“Spare me the idea Fletcher is the solution. The time to sign the ex-Scotland striker was more than a decade ago. Back then Lawwell was outgunned by Burnley for him.”

Lawwell has always been a very conservative chief executive and it is not a surprise that Celtic are being very careful with how much they spend.

They have shelled out £5m on Vasilis Barkas but with the club’s only other signing being Mohamed Elyounoussi on loan, Lennon has been left with a squad light on numbers at the beginning of the season.

Both Lawwell and the recruitment department need to step up their game in the next few weeks in order to ensure there is a team ready to make it ten league titles in a row.
