“It Would Be Magnificent…” Redknapp Urges Celtic And Rangers To Make Controversial Decision

Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp believes both Celtic and Rangers should consider joining the Premier League.

There has been a constant debate over the last couple of decades about whether the two Glasgow clubs would be better off playing their football in England, and Redknapp has added his weight behind the move:

“I was in America playing and Rangers and Celtic came over and suddenly there’s 50,000 people. They are massive clubs. Two of the biggest clubs world wide. It would be fantastic (if they came to the Premier League). How far is it? Teams fly everywhere so what difference would it be flying to Glasgow than Newcastle or anywhere? It would be magnificent if they came to the Premier League.”

While the idea of playing in the Premier League has often been talked about, there are plenty of reasons why it has never happened. First of all, the departure of the two biggest teams in Scotland would likely have disastrous effects for the domestic game.

Many Scottish teams rely on the revenue they receive from ticket sales to Celtic and Rangers away fans. Money from TV rights would likely plummet as well, with the two biggest draws no longer participating.

Access to the Champions League would also be a factor. The improvement in Scotland’s coefficient means the winner of the Scottish Premiership now gets through to the group stage, while second place enters the qualifying rounds. Finishing in the Premier League top four would be a much tougher task.
