Journalist Makes Concerning Remarks About Postecoglou’s Contract Situation As EPL Rumours Refuse To Go Away

Ange Postecoglou is not close to signing a contract extension with Celtic, according to The Scottish Sun journalist David Friel.

There have been suggestions that the Australian could put pen to paper on a new deal to silence speculation about interest from Premier League teams. However, Friel says Postecoglou is seemingly keeping his options open:

“I’ve probably been hearing whispers for about a year that he was about to sign a new long-term deal. It’s never happened yet. I think somewhere in the background, I dare say, that Ange Postecoglou’s rewards at Celtic are greater now than they were when he was first appointed.”

“He seems pretty relaxed about it and has been asked in the past about signing a long-term contract and said those things don’t really bother him too much. He just focuses on the here and now.”

There are two Premier League clubs that currently have vacancies: Leeds and Southampton. On the face of it, neither would be an attractive destination as Postecoglou would have to take over a team struggling against relegation.

As Kenny Dalglish has pointed out, the Australian is unlikely to leave Parkhead midway through the season but you do wonder whether he will be tempted by a move south of the border in the summer.

The jobs at Leeds and Southampton will be filled by then but Postecoglou has been linked with plenty of other Premier League clubs in recent months, including Wolves and Everton. If a team decides to make a change at the end of the campaign, Hoops fans will be keeping their fingers crossed that they can keep hold of their manager.
