Kevin Phillips Claims Celtic Ace Could Have Had His “Head Turned” By Latest Transfer Rumour

Former Southampton forward Kevin Phillips believes Celtic’s Kyogo Furuhashi may well be tempted by a move to the Saints.

The Japanese international only joined from Vissel Kobe for £4.6m back in July but reports last week indicated that Southampton had already taken a keen interest in the player.

Phillips says that Furuhashi will have taken notice of the rumours, but he believes Celtic will look to keep hold of the 26-year-old for the rest of the campaign:

“It is difficult for Celtic but players want to play in the Premier League. They know that. Unfortunately, when a Premier League club comes knocking it is hard for the player to turn down. From Celtic’s point of view, Furuhashi has done exceptionally well. I’m sure they are desperate to keep him. They will not want his head turned. It happens though. They will want him to at least see out the season.”

To be honest with you, the reports about Southampton’s interest came from an Italian website that doesn’t have the best track record in terms of accuracy so Hoops supporters should rest easy about any potential transfer.

Furuhashi has also addressed the speculation about the switch to England whilst on international duty. The striker claims he is only focused on performing well for both his current club and Japan:

“Good results could open that path for me, but I have to get results to survive at Celtic and the Japan National Team. I want to do the best I can and contribute to (both) teams.”

Considering how important he has been to manager Ange Postecoglou in terms of goals this season, it will be hoped that he returns from international duty fit and raring to go.
