Kiltie Rejects Kieran Tierney Comparisons As He Explains Why It Was “No Surprise” That Celtic Star Won Over His Critics

St Mirren midfielder Greg Kiltie says he used to have arguments with his friends about Greg Taylor before he proved the doubters wrong at Celtic.

Kiltie played alongside Taylor at Kilmarnock, but his teammate left to replace Kieran Tierney at the Hoops in 2019. Many looked at the differences between the two players, but Kiltie always felt that drawing comparisons was unfair:

“It is not a surprise. Greg is a really good footballer. When he first went in I probably had a few arguments with my mates. It wasn’t so much that he wasn’t up to it, it is they (Celtic) had just let Kieran Tierney go to Arsenal so it is a different type of player and the way they play is totally different. It was me basically telling them what Greg can do compared to Kieran.”

“You see him coming into the middle of the pitch and getting the ball, he is so comfortable in doing it, the way that Celtic play probably suits him to a tee. So, no surprise to me. He has been doing excellent at Celtic, he has been so good and he is another one we have to keep at length on Sunday.”

With Celtic facing St Mirren this weekend, Kiltie will be coming up against his old teammate. They won’t be facing each other in a one-on-one duel, with Kiltie set to start in central midfield, but they will surely catch up on old times after the game.

While Kiltie was a firm believer in Taylor’s ability from the get-go, it has taken a while longer for Hoops supporters to warm to the defender. He may not be at the same level as Tierney, with the Arsenal star still held in very high regard by fans, but Taylor is making a name for himself in his own right.
