Scottish football has plenty of glitz and glamour and has been the place where some of the world’s top footballers have spent time during their careers like Stiliyan Petrov, Virgil van Dyke and Mikel Arteta. Let’s take a look at the most popular players in the Scottish Premiership on Instagram.

The only players featured on this list play for either Celtic or Rangers – it’s understandable, given the Glasgow clubs’ long-standing dominance over the division.

One of the players on this list is a former Manchester City superstar – can you guess who it is?

Jota

First up on the list is Celtic’s Jota, who joined the Celts in the summer of 2022 – currently, the 24-year-old Portuguese star has 237,000 followers on Instagram.

A former Benfica youth academy product, much of his following can be attributed to this – Os Encarnados are arguably the biggest team in Portugal, and Jota was once one of their brightest prospects.

So far this season, Jota has scored 11 goals for the Bhoys, as well as racking up ten assists – he is one of the most versatile attacking players in the league.

Alfredo Morelos

One of the most well-known players in the SPFL, Alfredo Morelos, has a grand total of 276,000 followers on Instagram – he has become a cult hero at the Ibrox Stadium.

On top of this, he is also a Colombian international. Morelos has won 11 caps for Los Cafeteros, scoring a single goal – his status as a capped player only adds to his popularity online.

Morelos joined Rangers in 2017 – since then, the 26-year-old has scored 76 SPFL goals for the Gers across 174 appearances.

Ianis Hagi

Ianis Hagi, son of footballing legend Gheorghe Hagi, is the second-most followed SPFL player on Instagram – at the time of writing, Hagi has 352,000 followers on the site.

His connection with his father will have no doubt bolstered the 24-year-old’s popularity and notoriety. During his playing career, Gheorghe Hagi played for clubs such as Barcelona, Real Madrid and Galatasaray.

Of course, Ianis is no slouch himself. Despite his young age, he has already won 24 caps for his native Romania, scoring two goals on the international stage.

Joe Hart

Topping the list by a considerable margin is Celtic’s first-choice goalkeeper, Joe Hart. He is the only player in the SPFL to have over a million Instagram followers – in total, he has 1.4 million.

It is not at all difficult to see why. Hart spent 12 years at Manchester City – for much of that time, he was the Citizens’ number one.

Additionally, the veteran shot-stooper also received a plethora of caps for England – 75 in total. He is a household name in the Premier League and international football – he has also won two Premier League trophies, two League Cups and one FA Cup.
