Hibernian sporting director Graeme Mathie says he harbours an ambition to break the club’s transfer record if a team comes in for one of his best players this summer

Celtic have been tipped to make a move for Kevin Nisbet in recent weeks, with reports suggesting the Scottish international could be available for £4m, but Mathie claims he would be justified in asking for higher fees considering the success that Hibs had last season:

“It’s a bit of a personal crusade but I’d love to break the club’s transfer record. With the Brexit market as it is, we should be getting more money for Scottish players. I have had some robust conversations where I’ve said, ‘If you take the player at our club and make them Belgian or Dutch or Swedish, we’re not talking about the same number (transfer fee)’. Our league is competitive, our club competed in the top end of it and played in national semi-finals and finals last year. At some point, people need to recognise that.”

Hibernian’s record sale was in fact Scott Brown’s £4.4m move to the Hoops back in 2007 so it’s probably a record that is well overdue to be broken.

Whether Celtic will be the ones to break it again, it does seem unlikely at the moment. Nisbet could, though, be an option if the Scottish club do sell Odsonne Edouard before the transfer window closes, but manager Ange Postecoglou and the recruitment staff may have another target in mind.
