The Best Players In The Scottish Premiership This Season

The Scottish Premiership is perhaps one of the most overlooked leagues in world football. Regularly, particularly this season, it is playing host to some truly wonderful footballers.

For this list, we’ll be looking at four of the best players who are actively playing in the top tier of Scottish football. Do you agree with our picks?

To avoid this list being oversaturated with players from Rangers and Celtic, we’ll be limiting it to one entry per club. Of course, there are many talented footballers in the Scottish Premiership outside of these two – here’s one of them now.

Élie Youan

French sensation Elie Youan has, at several times this season, been a godsend for Hibernian. At just 24 years of age, the former Nantes hitman gets better with each passing game.

So far this season, Youan has scored six goals in all competitions for Hibs – on top of this, he has also registered six assists.

If there is one criticism to be levelled at Youan, it is his inconsistency. He tends to enjoy purple patches of goalscoring but is also prone to goal droughts.

Lawrence Shankland

Lawrence Shankland is a real throwback of a striker. Technically, he is far from the best player in the division – but very few are quite as adept at scoring goals as he is.

A natural goalscorer, he can find the back of the net in many different ways – whether he is using his powerful frame to win headers or clever movement off the ball, Shankland is lethal in the box.

The 27-year-old has been prolific for Hearts this season – so far, he has scored 18 goals in 30 league games, alongside four assists.

James Tavernier

James Tavernier is currently one of the top goalscorers in the Scottish Premiership – and he plays at right-back! This is a testament to the quality of Rangers’ main man this season.

Defensively, he is no slouch either – he can be somewhat naive at times, but he never pulls out of a challenge and is always on hand to defend Rangers’ goal when the Gers are under pressure.

Rangers’ club captain is also one of the longest-serving players in the SPFL – he has been a part of the Ibrox setup since 2015, when he signed from Wigan Athletic.

Kyogo Furuhashi

Who else could it be? This season, Kyogo Furuhashi has set the Scottish Premiership alight with his intricate work inside the box and laser-focused eye for goal.

As a centre-forward, Furuhashi has virtually no weaknesses. He is quick, possesses wonderful movement off the ball and is a slick finisher. Despite only being 5ft 7, he is also deceptively strong – allowing him to be more effective with his link-up play.

Furuhashi is currently the top goalscorer in the Scottish Premiership. His pace and ability to get in behind defences make it suicidal to play a high line against him – in that sense, he offers more to Celtic than most may imagine.
