Celtic midfielder Nir Bitton has signed a new three and a half year contract keeping him at Parkhead until 2023, the club have confirmed.

The Israeli international was nearing the last six months of his deal with the Hoops, and after the club announced the contract extension yesterday, supporters were backing the decision:

Bitton has been at the club six and a half years, but injury problems have meant he hasn’t played a prominent role in recent campaigns.

However, Neil Lennon’s return to the club coincided with the 28-year-old getting more game time. He was employed in an unfamiliar centre-back role at the beginning of the season, but despite playing out of position, he has performed admirably.

Bitton played very well in the 2-0 win over Rangers back in September, and he has come back into the starting line up to play at the back in Celtic’s last three games against Hamilton, Cluj and Hibernian.
