Celtic are interested in signing Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, according to journalist David Lynch.

Writing for This Is Anfield, the freelance reporter claims that the Hoops have “watched” the former England Under 21 international “regularly” this season.

It is believed that the Scottish champions are seriously considering Patterson as a potential replacement for current no.1 Joe Hart.

The 36-year-old has announced that he will retire when his current contract with Celtic expires at the end of May.

Lynch reports that Liverpool are also keen on Patterson, with the Reds anticipating the possible departure of current no.2 Caoimhin Kelleher.

The Irishman has coincidentally been mentioned as a target for Brendan Rodgers’ side, although many think he would cost too much to sign.

Patterson has other suitors, with the likes of Arsenal and English Championship clubs Leeds and Leicester City keeping tabs on his situation as well.

What do Celtic fans need to know about Patterson?

The 23-year-old started out in Sunderland’s academy, having been born in the local area around Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He made his senior debut for the Black Cats in November 2020, playing in a 2–1 defeat to Fleetwood Town.

To gain more first-team experience, Patterson was loaned out to Notts County the following season, making 13 appearances for the National League side before returning to the Stadium of Light in the 2022 January transfer window.

Patterson then established himself as a regular starter under the management of Lee Johnson and he has remained no.1 ever since, having racked up 119 appearances.

Despite his lack of experience at the top level, though, Sunderland have reportedly slapped a £10m to £15m asking price on the keeper. That is an eye-watering sum and it would be a massive surprise if Celtic considered paying anywhere close to those figures for Patterson.
