Celtic Are ‘Admirers’ Of World Cup Semi Finalist Who ‘Could Leave’ Premier League Giants This Summer

Celtic are “admirers” of Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier, according to 90min.com.

The website claims that the 29-year-old ‘could leave’ the London club before the transfer window closes on September 1st, with the Scottish champions among his potential suitors.

Former Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou did not select Dier in his matchday squad for the 2-2 draw against Brentford at the weekend, with the centre-back having fallen behind Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Davinson Sanchez in the pecking order.

The Englishman is an extremely experienced player, having helped his country reach the World Cup semi-finals in 2018 and the quarter-finals four years later.

For Spurs, Dier has made 361 appearances in total, including the Champions League final four years ago, but his time with the Premier League side seems to be coming to an end.

Celtic are not the only team pursuing the defender

French side Monaco are likely to be one of the Hoops’ main rivals to sign Dier, along with the likes of Crystal Palace, Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr and potentially a few Bundesliga teams.

At the moment, it is not clear how much the centre-half would cost. He has less than a year left on his contract and could potentially leave as a free agent next year, so Tottenham are unlikely to be demanding a sizeable sum.

Dier’s wages could be an issue

The England international is not among the highest earners at Spurs but he is still taking home around £85,000 a week, which is not a salary that Celtic could afford to pay.

Considering the interest from other English teams, as well as Saudi Arabia, France and Germany, you would have to say that the Hoops’ chances of securing his signature are rather low currently. When you also factor in that the Scottish club are about to bring in another center-back, Gustaf Lagerbielke, you can’t see a deal for Dier being explored.
