‘At The Front Of The Race’ – Report Names Celtic And Rangers As The 2 Favourites To Land Portuguese U21 Ace

Celtic are interested in signing Wolves forward Fabio Silva on loan when the January transfer window opens, according to O Jogo.

The Portuguese newspaper claims that the Scottish champions and Glasgow rivals Rangers are “at the front of the race” to snap up the striker.

It is believed that clubs in Spain are also pursuing Silva but a move to Scotland is said to be the likeliest outcome at the moment.

The Portuguese Under 21 international has struggled for game time this season, having made just 3 starts in the Premier League.

In fact, Silva hasn’t even made it off the bench since the start of November, when he came as a substitute for the final 10 minutes of the 2-1 defeat to Sheffield United.

Silva has struggled to live up to a huge price tag

Wolves paid a club-record fee when they signed the 21-year-old from Porto in 2020. Despite having only made a handful of senior appearances, he cost a staggering £35m.

Since then, he has scored just 5 goals in 72 appearances for the English Premier League side, and he has also been loaned out to Anderlecht and PSV Eindhoven.

Celtic need to recruit a striker in January

With Kyogo Furuhashi, Oh Hyeon-gyu and Daizen Maeda all flying out to Qatar to play in the Asian Cup next month, manager Brendan Rodgers won’t have a senior striker available for selection.

Bringing in a forward, like Silva, on loan makes a lot of sense, although many supporters will feel that there are better options on the market than the Portuguese star.

While he did have decent spells in Belgium and the Netherlands last season, his form for Wolves is a concern. He is not exactly a prolific scorer, so there are questions over whether he will be able to provide the goals in Kyogo’s absence.
