Celtic ‘Interested’ In Signing 9 Goal Midfielder But They Face Fierce Battle With EPL And Spanish Clubs

Celtic are one of seven teams “interested” in signing Manchester City midfielder James McAtee, according to the Daily Mail.

The playmaker could be set to leave the Etihad this summer, with the Hoops, Wolves, Brighton, Southampton, Real Sociedad,  AZ Alkmaar and Sheffield United among his suitors.

McAtee actually spent last season on loan at the Blades, having scored nine goals as he helped the Yorkshire club get promoted back to the Premier League.

At the moment, it is not known which of these teams are looking to sign the 20-year-old on a permanent deal or on loan.

It’s likely that Celtic are weighing up a temporary move, and their strong relationship with City could help them get a deal over the line.

McAtee is not the only City player that Celtic are looking at

Reports have also claimed that Brendan Rodgers’ side are keeping tabs on McAtee’s teammate Tommy Doyle.

The teenager was on loan at Sheffield United last year too, but it would be fair to say that McAtee was the more impressive performer out of the two City players during their spells at Bramall Lane.

Rodgers has confirmed that he wants to strengthen the squad before the transfer window shuts

Despite getting off to a strong start to their title defence with a 4-2 win over Ross County at the weekend, the Hoops boss admitted after the game that he wants to make more signings before deadline day. However, he was specifically talking about recruiting a replacement for Carl Starfelt, who looks set for a move to Spain.

Signing another midfielder may depend on outgoings, as Celtic are not exactly short of central midfield players. If you include James McCarthy and Ismaila Soro, they are actually nine in the first-team squad currently, so bringing in someone like McAtee is not a priority.
