Rodgers Makes Transfer Stance Clear As Arsenal Consider Permanent Sale Of £25M Defender

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that he does want to add new signings to his squad before the transfer window closes.

Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney is, once again, the subject of speculation, with a return to Glasgow being suggested as a possibility but, when asked about the rumours, Rodgers said he would not be drawn into hypothetical scenarios:

“I don’t speak on what ifs. There’s speculation around many players, naturally, there’s an association with Kieran and his past here and our past together but there’s nothing to add to it. I want to add to the squad and if we can strengthen that I would be happy with that.”

Rodgers has already said that a move to sign Tierney on a permanent basis is not realistic due to the cost of the player. The left-back was sold to the Gunners for £25m four years ago and he is thought to be valued at roughly the same amount now.

A loan deal is not likely

A number of reports have suggested that a temporary move back to Celtic Park could be on the cards but trusted source The Athletic have claimed that Arsenal would not approve such a deal.

La Liga club Real Sociedad are lining up a loan offer but it is believed the Gunners would only consider such a proposal if it included an “obligation to buy”.

Celtic could play the waiting game

With Tierney seemingly well down the pecking order at Arsenal, there is a chance that he will agitate for a switch away from the Emirates before the window shuts.

The Scot is clearly open to returning to Celtic, and the Hoops could wait until closer to the deadline to make a loan offer and see whether the Gunners decide to soften their stance. It is definitely something to keep an eye on, even if Rodgers is not contemplating a transfer happening at this stage.
