Anthony Joseph Claims 21 Year Old Winger Is “Trying To Push” For Transfer As Celtic Eye Jota Replacement

Gangwon FC winger Yang Hyun-jun is “trying to push” for a move to Celtic, according to Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph.

The Hoops have made a formal bid for the 21-year-old but his club are keen to keep him until the January transfer window after the South Korean season has finished. However, Joseph told GiveMeSport that Yang and his agent are making things difficult for Gangwon:

“Celtic did make an approach last week for Yang Hyun-jun and he very much wants to move to Celtic. And he has been trying to push it with his agent as well, the club aren’t too happy that his agent is really pushing it and some of the comments he’s made publicly as well.”

As Joseph mentions, Yang has also spoken out to say he wants a transfer to Europe, although he did emphasise that he would accept Gangwon’s decision if he is forced to stay.

A potential replacement for Jota?

Before the news about Jota’s move to Saudi Arabia became public, Celtic were already linked with offers for both Yang and Marco Tilio. Considering the number of wingers at the club already, it was surprising that bids for the pair were being considered.

Now, with Jota seemingly on the verge of a £25m switch to the Middle East, things do make a lot more sense. Both Tilio (who has already signed) and Yang could fill the void left by the Portuguese star.

It has to be said, though, that both are unknown quantities in Europe. Yang, in particular, has limited experience, having made only 68 senior appearances, scoring nine goals and contributing five assists. If the Hoops do eventually persuade Gangwon into selling the winger, an adaptation period will likely be needed. The presence of another Korean, Oh Hyeon-gyu, at the Scottish champions should, hopefully, help him settle in.
