Kyogo Addresses Celtic Future Amid Speculation About £30M Transfer

Celtic forward Kyogo Furuhashi says he hasn’t even considered what the future holds for him beyond the end of the season.

The departure of Ange Postecoglou and the re-appointment of Brendan Rodgers has prompted more speculation about the Japanese international’s future. Asked about his situation at the Hoops, Kyogo replied:

“My ambition this season was to win all three trophies and win the Player of the Year and I have managed that. I was able to do that because I had a lot of support from my teammates. But right now, I want to have a long rest and think about things after that. I am delighted I was able to end a great season for me on a high.”

It was reported earlier this month that Kyogo could be the subject of a £30m bid from Spurs, with Postecoglou looking to bring the player with him south of the border. The striker does, however, seem to be keeping his cards close to his chest.

Rodgers will be hoping to build his team around Kyogo

After scoring 34 goals last campaign and winning Player of the Year, you would think that one of  Brendan Rodgers’ first tasks will be to sit down with Kyogo and hold talks with the 28-year-old.

The Celtic boss needs to reaffirm the Japanese star’s importance to the club, and emphasise that he will be an integral part of his plans going forward.

It remains to be seen whether Tottenham will actually make an approach for Kyogo or whether it is just paper talk, but getting the player to commit his long-term future has to be among the club’s priorities.

Kyogo’s contract has two years left to run

With the forward now two years into a four-year deal, it is surely the right time to offer him fresh terms to stop any speculation.

Celtic have had issues renewing contracts in the past year (e.g. Juranovic, Giakoumakis and Abada) so, hopefully, any discussions with Kyogo would be more straightforward.
