Celtic Star Now Among Club’s ‘Top Earners’ As They Try To Ward Off Premier League Interest

Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley is among the club’s “top earners” after signing a new contract at the weekend, according to The Scottish Sun.

The tabloid claims that the 22-year-old now takes home a salary similar to captain Callum McGregor and star striker Kyogo Furuhashi.

O’Riley has only been at Celtic Park for just over 18 months but he has put pen to paper on a new four-year deal, keeping him with the Scottish champions until the summer of 2027.

It is not a surprise that the Hoops were so keen to tie the Danish Under 21 international down to an extension, considering his phenomenal start to the season.

O’Riley’s last-minute winner against Motherwell on Saturday was his 5th goal in just 7 league appearances, making him the Scottish Premiership top scorer, ahead of his teammate Furuhashi.

The Celtic star has been linked with English Premier League sides

Over the course of the last year, a sizeable number of EPL clubs have been credited with an interest in O’Riley.

The likes of Crystal Palace and Newcastle have reportedly kept close tabs on the midfielder’s development, while Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool have been watching him too.

O’Riley’s new contract will protect his value, and it will put Celtic in a strong negotiating position if a team makes an approach in the New Year.

Celtic have already rejected an 8 figure sum for O’Riley

It was reported over the summer that English Championship side Leeds offered £10m to sign the Dane, but manager Brendan Rodgers has since revealed that he asked his board to reject any bids:

“It was an open conversation, and that’s what I’ve always had here with [chief executive] Michael Nicholson and the guys. I didn’t think we could afford to lose another starter and the club were very supportive on that. They were great.”

Fans will be delighted that Celtic stuck to their guns, with O’Riley currently the club’s most in-form player.
