Celtic Remain Keen On Recruiting Mexican Star With £7.9m Release Clause

Celtic are among the teams interested in signing Club America centre-back Edson Alvarez, according to reports in Mexico.

PSV Eindhoven and Ajax are also said to be interested in the player, while another source has suggested that Wolves could also be keeping tabs on the 21-year-old.

Alvarez was reportedly the subject of a $6.5m offer from Celtic in December but Club America turned down the bid.

The defender is believed to have a release clause of $10m (£7.9m) after the player recently renewed his contract until 2022.

Alvarez is a player who is seen to have huge potential and he already has 22 caps for Mexico at senior level.

Celtic are very likely to be pursuing a new centre-half this summer. Dedryck Boyata is leaving for Hertha Berlin, while Filip Benkovic is returning to Leicester City after his loan spell.

It means the Hoops will only have Kristoffer Ajer and Jozo Simunovic as potential options for the centre of defence.
