Celtic Told They Must Pay At Least 8M To Secure Deal For Nigerian Under 23 Marksman

Celtic will have to pay between £8m and £10m to sign Liverpool forward Taiwo Awoniyi this summer, according to reports in England.

The Nigerian Under 23 international was first linked with a move to Parkhead in January, with Glasgow rivals Rangers also said to be interested in the player.

Since then, it is believed the likes of Fulham, West Brom, Stoke, Stuttgart and Wolfsburg have enquired about Awoniyi.

The 23-year-old is currently on loan at Bundesliga club Union Berlin, where he has scored five goals in 21 appearances. The German club are believed to have been impressed enough to want him on a permanent basis too.

Awoniyi has been at Liverpool for six years but work permit problems have meant he hasn’t played a single game for the Reds. However, the rule changes brought in by Brexit mean he will now qualify for a visa.

It seems doubtful that Celtic will maintain their interest now they are aware of his price tag. A replacement for Odsonne Edouard will be needed but it’s likely they’ll pursue other targets.
