Hay Highlights One Key Area That Jullien Must Improve After Being “Startled” In Celtic Loss

Celtic legend Davie Hay believes Christopher Jullien must not be intimidated by the physicality of some opponents he will face in Scottish football.

Writing in his column for the Evening Times, Hay says that while the Frenchman has looked good since his £7m arrival from Toulouse in the summer, he was bullied by Livingston striker Lyndon Dykes last weekend in the 2-0 defeat:

“[He [Jullien] wouldn’t have been used to that sort of environment or that sort of contest in France, where someone is bashing him about. He looked startled by it.”

“If a player is physical against you, you have to match it, but the last thing you do is allow that to visibly affect your performance or sidetrack you from what you are meant to be doing.”

“It became a personal battle between the two, and Jullien lost his focus on the game as a result. He let his opponent know he was getting to him.”

At 6ft 5, Jullien should have the physique to win most aerial duels, but he will also need to ensure that he can outmuscle opposition forwards.

The French defender has already shown he can rise to the big occasion, after starring in the 2-0 win over Rangers in the Old Firm derby at Ibrox last month, but he will need to be consistent in his performances.

The Livingston loss may well be a one-off, with the Hoops having gone down to ten men early on, but Jullien would certainly have learned that the Scottish Premiership is no walk in the park.
