We witnessed of the greatest international shocks in recent history last night, as Scotland defeated Spain in the Euro 2024 qualifiers – with a Celtic superstar playing a key role.

While Manchester United’s Scott McTominay will take the headlines for scoring the Tartan Army’s two goals, Callum McGregor’s industrious performance by his side should not be overlooked.

The once-unprecedented midfield of Spain looked like a shadow of its former self as they were swarmed in the middle of the park for the majority of the first half. McGregor’s tireless running played a huge part in this, as he regularly prevented the Spaniards from moving the ball around in a patient manner.

He frequently harassed the Spanish midfield, refusing to give them any space to breathe. He forced Spain’s players into making mistakes on the ball, which Scotland were more than happy to take advantage of.

McGregor’s wonderful defensive performance against La Roja allowed McTominay to be more liberal with his attacking advances – which, in turn, allowed Scotland to score their two goals of the game.

Spain came close on a couple of occasions – former Newcastle United striker Joselu hit the bar in the first half – but the Scots held firm and prevented the Spaniards from creating any major chances throughout the 90 minutes.

McGregor is enjoying a decent season with the Celts, having scored two goals and notching up two assists in 22 league games. Last night, he put in perhaps his finest performance of the current campaign.
