Major European League Makes Decision That Could Have Big Consequences For Celtic’s Title Hopes

Ligue One have awarded the 2019/20 league title to Paris Saint-Germain. The French government banned all football until September, and the decision forced the LFP into ending the French league season early, but there had been claims that the whole campaign could be voided.

However, an agreement has been reached for final standings to be based on a points per game basis; the same solution that the SPFL have come up with.

With PSG 12 points ahead of Marseille, and with one game in hand, they have been handed the Championship, with Amiens and Toulouse relegated.

This could have big consequences for the SPFL and Celtic, with the Premiership’s final league positions yet to be formally called.

UEFA have called on country associations to award places on “sporting merit” and if they accept Ligue One’s decision, it will provide a precedent for the SPFL and other leagues to follow suit.

It could lead to Liverpool in England being crowned champions, as well as Barcelona in Spain, although other countries are said to be determined to resume their season rather than ending them early.
