RANKED: The Five Best Seasons In The History Of Celtic Football Club

Celtic are one of the most successful football clubs not just in the UK, but in the entire world.

They’re the only team to win a European quintuple and were also the first British club to win the Champions League (then known as the European Cup).

But what has been the best campaign in Celtic’s history? Today, we’ll be taking a look at the five best seasons to be a Bhoys fan.

2019/20

Celtic made history in 2019/20, when they became the first team in Scotland to have completed a domestic quadruple treble – meaning they won the SPFL, the Scottish FA Cup and the Scottish League Cup four years in a row.

It wasn’t a perfect season – Celtic floundered in Europe, losing in the third qualifying round for the Champions League to CFR Cluj. On top of this, they also lost in the Europa League Round of 32 to Copenhagen.

Domestically, on the other hand, Celtic looked almost unbeatable in 19/20. They topped the league by 13 points, inflicting a home defeat on Rangers along the way.

2017/18

Another season where Celtic won the domestic treble but struggled in Europe, this one is above the previous entry for one simple reason – in 2017/18, Celtic completely dominated Rangers.

They defeated the Gers on four separate occasions in this one single campaign. Among the wins were a 4-0 hammering in the Scottish Cup and a 5-0 demolition job towards the end of the league season.

Celtic faced little opposition on their way to another league title win. They finished nine points above the team in second, Aberdeen, with a +48 goal difference.

2000/01

Celtic fans will remember this one fondly – with the likes Henrik Larsson, Neil Lennon and Chris Sutton in the team, there was little stopping Celtic from capturing the league title.

They did so with consummate ease, as the Celts ultimately finished top of the table by a 15 point margin. The only black mark on this season was a humiliating defeat to Rangers, where Celtic were beaten 5-1.

The Hoops would gain a modicum of revenge, however, as they went on to beat Rangers 3-0 away in the league and 3-1 in the Scottish Cup Semi Final.

2016/17

2016/17 marked the pinnacle of Celtic’s dominance over Scottish football. This season is special for one key reason – across all domestic competitions, Brendan Rodgers’ team did not lose a single game – only failing to win four of them.

However, Celtic, once again, did not do well in Europe this season. They were dumped out of the Champions League in the group stage without picking up a single win, finishing bottom of their group with three points.

This aside, in the league, Celtic finished an eye-watering 30 points above the team in second (Aberdeen). Additionally, they also finished 39 points above Rangers.

1966/67

What else could it be? Perhaps the greatest league season by any football club in history, 68/69 will be remembered by Celtic fans forever as the year when they won the European quintuple.

Domestically, Celtic won it all this season – the League Cup, the Scottish Cup and the league itself were all collected by the Celts. Their crowning achievement came in the European Cup, where they beat Inter Milan 2-1 in the final, thanks to goals from Thomas Gemmell and Stevie Chalmers.

The ‘Lisbon Lions’ were 1-0 down after seven minutes, but overturned the deficit and became the first team in Britain to win the European Cup. It marked the first and only time that Celtic have won Europe’s biggest prize.
