Mark Hendry Addresses Rumours That Celtic Are Lining Up £11M Jota Replacement

Celtic are not pursuing a move for Manchester City winger Carlos Borges, according to Football Scotland reporter Mark Hendry.

The reliable journalist says that, despite speculation, the Portuguese Under 19 international is not a transfer target for the Scottish champions.

Borges has been tipped as a potential replacement for Jota, who was sold for £25m to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad earlier this month.

Although Borges is a very talented young player, having scored 29 goals for City at youth level last season, the Hoops would likely have to break their transfer record to get him.

When it was reported that Nottingham Forest were interested in the 19-year-old last month, ESPN reported that City would want at least £11m, which would be £2m more than Celtic paid PSG for Odsonne Edouard in 2018.

Celtic would face stiff competition for Borges

Many teams have weighed up offers for the City youngster over the past year due to his performances in Premier League 2, the UEFA Youth League and the EFL Trophy.

In addition to Forest, both Southampton and Bournemouth are said to have considered bids, but, at this stage, no team has entered formal talks to sign Borges.

Are other wingers being targeted?

With Marco Tilio having arrived from Melbourne City, the Hoops have effectively replaced Jota already but it does seem as if manager Brendan Rodgers wants another wide man brought in.

Discussions have taken place with South Korean club Gangwon FC about signing Yang Hyun-jun and, from the sound of things, a deal is looking increasingly likely.

After initially refusing to sell Yang this summer, Gangwon have relented to some extent, and they will now allow the winger to make the switch to Scotland as long as they can find a replacement. If he does join, you can’t see a move for Borges being made as well.
