Arteta Snaps Back At Questions About Arsenal Star’s Absence Amid Celtic Rumours

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has hit back at claims that Kieran Tierney is not in his first-team plans.

The Scottish international was not in the Gunners’ squad for the 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest last weekend, increasing speculation about the ex-Celtic player’s future at the Emirates but, when asked about the defender’s situation, Arteta replied:

“Well, he played the Community Shield. How can a player that played five days before (the league started) not be in my plans?”

Tierney did make an appearance off the bench at Wembley earlier this month, but he has continued to be overlooked for starts.

Even after Jurrien Timber sustained a serious knee injury, there are reports that Arsenal are seeking a replacement, despite the fact that Tierney is ready and waiting to take his place in the team. A departure before the transfer window shuts, therefore, looks likely.

Tierney has limited options

Newcastle were heavy favourites to sign the 25-year-old but they have now prioritised a move for Chelsea’s Lewis Hall instead, having had a £28m bid accepted.

The main alternative destination for Tierney is said to be La Liga side Real Sociedad but they only want him on loan.

Is there a chance the defender could return to Celtic?

One of the main reasons why Tierney is still with the Gunners is due to the fact that the London club want to sell him.

So far clubs have not managed to meet the player’s asking price, and Arsenal have continued to resist loan offers.

Whether they will decide to change that stance the closer we get to the transfer deadline, we shall have to wait and see. If a temporary move does become possible, it could still be something that Celtic seriously consider pursuing. For now, though, fans should keep their expectations in check.
