Celtic are expected to revive their interest in Brondby striker Mathias Kvistgaarden, according to Tipsbladet editor Troels Bager Thogersen.
The Hoops failed with a €4m (£3.4m) offer for the 21-year-old in the summer but Thogersen says he has it on good authority that the Scottish champions will make another approach for the player during the January transfer window:
“I know from good sources in Scotland that Celtic are back in the game [for Kvistgaarden].”
Kvistgaarden has been in decent form this season, scoring 5 goals and providing 7 assists in 17 league appearances, so it is not a surprise that Celtic have continued to keep tabs on Danish Under 21 international’s performances.
The forward has a very high asking price
It looks like Brendan Rodgers’ side may have to bid over double their previous offer for Kvistgaarden, with Tipsbladet claiming that Brondby’s current valuation is a staggering €10m (£8.6m).
The Danish Superliga side may feel justified in demanding such a high fee as it is believed that clubs in Germany, England and France are also pursuing the striker‘s signature.
Do Celtic need to sign Kvistgaarden?
Oh Hyeon-gyu got himself a brace against Hibernian during the 4-1 win on Wednesday evening, and the South Korean international is certainly making a case for himself to start more games.
With Kyogo Furuhashi also available to Rodgers, there is an argument to say that spending a sizeable sum on Kvistgaarden is not worthwhile.
However, with the Asian Cup set to take place next month, cover will be needed for both Oh and Kyogo. Whether that means the Hoops will be tempted to splash the cash in order to make up for the pair’s absence, we shall have to wait and see.
