“It’s Not Before Time” FIFA Delegate Suggests UEFA U Turn On Ending League Seasons Is Likely

The Chief of FIFA’s medical committee Michel D’Hooghe has suggested that UEFA will perform a U-turn on the decision to stop leagues from declaring their seasons over.

The ongoing health crisis has already led to Belgium ending their campaign early, with Scotland expected to follow suit, but UEFA president Alexander Ceferin has suggested that leagues could have their European places rescinded if they make such a decision.

However, D’Hooghe thinks that with games unlikely to go ahead in the next few months, UEFA will be forced into a rethink:

“I have the distinct impression UEFA have turned and have changed their mind. And that’s a very good thing because lives are at stake here.”

“I admire the work of Marc Van Ranst and welcome UEFA asking him for advice on the coronavirus crisis. It’s not before time too.”

It must be pointed out that D’Hooghe is a former chairman of the Belgium FA, which does make his opinion slightly biased on the matter.

With the SPFL in a state of turmoil over the proposed resolution to end the season early, a public statement from UEFA backing such proposals would certainly help get things back on track, although it remains to be seen when or if that will happen.
