TalkSPORT presenter and Celtic fan Alan Brazil has suggested that striker Odsonne Edouard may well be handed the fabled number 7 jersey in order to keep him at Parkhead next season.
The former Ipswich star says he is aware that one player will be given the shirt number due to sponsorship reasons, and he has tipped the Frenchman to be bestowed with the honour:
“A little bit of news from Glasgow. By all accounts, Edouard could get the number 7 shirt at Celtic next year. There’s meant to be a magnificent seven coming – something to do with the sponsors. So if he stays at Celtic..hello, we”re going for ten-in-a-row.”
Supporters on Twitter are mostly behind Edouard getting the number seven:
No better man for the job, top player

Fail to see how giving him a number will persuade him to stay?

A befitting shirt number. It has been handed to many false pretenders since Henrik. @Oedouard22 has earned the right to wear it.

I disagree and for 1 reason only. Considering the history of number 7 for our club I think it's only fitting that we have a suitable number 7 to fire us to 10IAR

A perfect number for him! No problem for him to fill a big boot of 7 ?

Whether it is a sponsor-driven initiative or not, it seems like a good decision to hand Edouard the number to signify how important he is to the team.
The likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Newcastle have all been reported as being interested in him, and supporters will certainly support any attempt to help keep him away from the clutches of the English clubs.
Especially with the prospect of ten league titles in a row, retaining Edouard for another season is of paramount importance.
