Postecoglou Reveals When International Midfielder Could Make Celtic Debut

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou says supporters will have to wait until after the international break to see summer signing Oliver Abildgaard in action.

The Danish international joined the Hoops on a season-long loan before the transfer window closed but he has not made an appearance so far. Postecoglou has confirmed that the midfielder is lacking match fitness and it may be a while before he makes his debut:

“In terms of Oliver, he’s a bit different because he missed all of pre-season and came in late. He wasn’t really training. We’ve got to be a bit patient with him. We’ve got another two weeks of international break where we can do some work with him. I think you’ll see more of him post-international break, rather than now.”

Looking at Celtic’s fixtures, you would think that Abildgaard could get some minutes off the bench when the Hoops take on Motherwell at home on October 1st.

In terms of when the 26-year-old could get his first start, though, it is harder to guess. With an away match at St Johnstone sandwiched between two crucial Champions League group games against RB Leipzig, it’s difficult to see him being named in the eleven for any of those matches. The fixture versus Hibs at Celtic Park midway through next month could, though, be a potential opportunity for the Dane to feature.
