Sky Sports Reporter Claims Celtic Summer Signing Should Have Cost 8.6M

Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis should have cost the club €10m (£8.6m), according to Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph.

The Hoops actually managed to secure the Greek international’s services for just £2.5m from VVV Venlo before the transfer window shut.

Giakoumakis was the Eredivisie’s top scorer last season and Joseph claims Celtic managed to snap up the 26-year-old for such a low price simply because VVV had been relegated to the second tier:

“He was available for that price due to Venlo being relegated. Had they not been relegated, I was told they were looking for €10 million for him.”

It will be very interesting to see how Giakoumakis performs in the Scottish Premiership. The forward was not a prolific goalscorer until last campaign so there will be some concern that he is a one-season wonder.

However, if the Greek does start banging in the goals with regularity over the coming weeks and months, it will undoubtedly reinforce the belief that Celtic got an absolute bargain.

Giakoumakis could make his first appearance this weekend when his new club take on Ross County at Parkhead.
