Ex-Rangers captain Barry Ferguson believes Celtic will consider replacing Joe Hart with current Scotland no.1 Angus Gunn.

The 28-year-old got his 9th cap for his country during the 1-0 defeat to Northern Ireland on Tuesday evening and Ferguson thinks that, as long as the keeper doesn’t get promoted with Norwich, he could be an option that the Hoops look to pursue:

“He’s a good goalkeeper, and he’s playing at a good level down there. But it will all depend if they do get into the playoffs and get into the Premier League because there’s no way it’s going to cross his mind to leave Norwich. But if they don’t get promoted, then I think it could be one that Celtic would certainly would look at because he’s a very good goalkeeper.”

It should be pointed out that Gunn will have just a year left on his contract at the end of the season so there is a chance he could be on the market no matter what division Norwich are playing in next season.

Based on his performances for the Canaries, he does seem to be a decent choice, having kept 11 clean sheets in all competitions as well as having a 70.8% save ratio.

Celtic have considered alternative targets

The likes of Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher and Trabzonspor’s Ugurcan Cakir have been mentioned as other potential options with the Scottish champions seeking a new number one. Both would, however, cost a lot of money, which may rule them out of a switch to Celtic Park.

RKC Waalwijk’s Ettiene Vaessen has been posited as another possible target as he is available on a free transfer but the Dutchman is unproven at the top level.

Gunn could be the perfect middle-ground candidate; not too expensive but also possessing the requisite talent to be a suitable successor for Hart in goal.
