David James Issues Warning To Liverpool Star Amid Celtic Interest

Ex-Liverpool keeper David James has urged Celtic transfer target Caomhin Kelleher to remain at Anfield.

The Republic of Ireland international is said to be on the Hoops’ list of options to replace current no.1 Joe Hart but James says Kelleher should be patient and stay with the Reds so he can be the long-term replacement for Alisson Becker:

“I’m not sure what his career ‘should be’ looks like Because if you’re winning trophies, which most players when they start their journey in a football career want to do, he’s qualifying in that department. He’s winning trophies with Liverpool, even if he isn’t the out-and-out no. 1 goalkeeper.”

“Alisson will not last forever, even if he is the best goalkeeper in the world. And if you’re continually adding trophies to your collection as Kelleher is, then it’s a matter of time before Alisson will move on and therefore, you should be able to settle in and be the no.1.”

“I can’t think of any other clubs at the moment, especially in England, where either Kelleher is likely to get the no. 1 position or he’s going to win as many trophies as he’s likely to win with Liverpool. I think he’s doing the right thing staying where he is.”

Kelleher will have a decision to make this summer

It should be pointed out that Alisson is only 31 years of age and, with the Brazilian’s contract having 3 and a half years left to run, he won’t be giving up his No.1 jersey any time soon.

With Kelleher now in his mid-20s, he may feel it is time to step out of Alisson’s shadow, especially after showing what he is capable of in the Carabao Cup final. A transfer at the end of the season may be considered.

Could the keeper end up at Celtic?

As mentioned, the Scottish champions are looking for a successor to Joe Hart, who is retiring this summer, but the big obstacle with regards to buying Kelleher is his price tag.

It is not a complete surprise that Brendan Rodgers’ side have been linked with a cheaper alternative, with Trabzonspor’s Ugurcan Cakir also believed to be on the club’s radar.
